Conservation and Protection of the Mayfly Species

Even thought the mayfly, just like any other insect, is a terrible thing to some and an annoyance to the others, you should know that it has its own place and importance in the ecosystem, as do all the forms of life. The mayfly are small insects and come in a variety of species. There are two suborders, Schistonota and Pannota. The first suborder is divided in four super families, each having their own species. The second suborder has two super families, again with several species for each. The mayfly can be represented in a variety of ways. The importance placed on the small insect in terms of conservation and protection is related to some of the species included in the categories mentioned. The fact that they are considered for conservation shows that even the smallest members of the ecosystem have an important contribution to it and must not be left in disregard by people.

The conservation and protection of the mayfly is a rather delicate matter. Obviously, due to the fact that an insect is the concern, there are many difficulties which surface in the process. One of the elements which stands in the way of proper research for conservation is the fact that the species have not been monitored. As a result, there is no recent information on the particular species of the mayfly other than the facts gathered upon the discovery, study and recognition of it as part of a suborder and of a super family.

Some researches believe that there are species of the mayfly in North America that have been extinct. For example, the Pentagenia robusta mayfly was discovered in the 1800s and no other notice of it has been issued since. After many years of research and study, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature decided to place one of the mayfly species, the Tasmanophlebi lacus-coerulei, on their red list as vulnerable. Therefore, the fact that the species number is decreasing has been noted and properly verified, which shows the importance of the insect for the proper function of the ecosystem.
