Debunking A Myth – The Mayfly Is Not Actually A May Fly

[Facebook] [Twitter]

The mayfly has a rather misleading name and many people think because of its name that the mayfly is a fly that only appears in May. Well, this is a myth, but not many know about it. The name of the mayfly has not really much to do with the actual month of the year. The name of the mayfly is inspired only by a certain species of mayfly that appeared in the same time when a flower named Mayflower or Hawthorn is in bloom. So, “Ephemera danica” inspired the generic name of the mayfly, but without anything of the characteristics it has to tie her to the month of May. Even if the name is misleading, an important information related to this bug is that many species only live for a day. It may come as a surprise, but mostly mayflies do not have enough time to live for a whole month of May.

Disappointing or not, the mayfly has nothing to do with the month. Actually, the first generic name that was proposed for this insect was “dayfly”, as most live just for a day. Because there are also several species that have a different lifespan than the vast majority, specialists finally went for mayfly. And so, the misconception that the mayfly only appears in the month of May was born among people who are not passionate about these flies or among those who are not interested to learn more on this topic.

Although the mayfly is a very interesting species and specialists are fascinated with it, regular people do not have very much information about it. This is why most of them think that mayfly is a name given literally to this species, to describe it accurately. Many are disappointed when finding out that the mayfly is actually a name given to the insect because of the relation of it with a certain flower. Even so, things must be clear, the mayfly has its name due to a flower which blooms in the same time with the apparition of the bug. And actually, this is really a more interesting story for its name.

What Is A Mayfly

A mayfly is an insect which belongs to the order of Ephemeroptera and to an ancient group of insects called Palaeoptera. A mayfly is an aquatic insect that has an immature stage of one year lived in freshwater. After this period, the mayfly adults, depending on the species, live a few minutes or a few days. Because the lifespan of mayflies is so short, it often happens that they mature at once and, in the spring or in the fall, large groups can be seen everywhere around. During this time, mayflies are dancing around each other or rest with the whole group on any free surface they can find. In the whole world live about 2500 species of mayfly. 630 of them live in the North America.

A mayfly can be also named a dayfly, a shadfly, a Green Bay Fly, a lake fly, a fishfly, a midgee, a Canadian soldier or a jinx fly. The scientific classification of a mayfly includes the kingdom – Animalia, the phylum – Arthropoda, the class – Insecta, the subclass – Pterygota, the division – Palaeoptera, the superorder – Ephemeropteroldea and the order – Ephemeroptera. The word Ephemeroptera itself describes the attributes of a mayfly. The Greek ephemeros means short-lived and pteron means wing, so the word Ephemeroptera is a description for a fly with a short lifespan.

The conservation of different mayfly species is very important because until now there are already 4 North American species of mayfly that seem to be extinct. Among them, Pentagenia robusta and Ephemera compar. Pentagenia robusta was a mayfly that used to live along the Ohio River, close to Cincinnati. Since the 19th century nobody in the area spotted a Pentagenia robusta. Ephemera compar was from the foothills of Colorado, but in the last 50 years, no Ephemera compar was seen in Colorado. IUCN, also known as the International Union for Conservation of Nature has a red list where endangered species are listed, in order to be kept under observation. On this list is included even a mayfly species called Tasmanophlebi lacus-coerulei. This is a large lake mayfly from Australia that is considered to be vulnerable.

About the Mayfly

The mayfly is one of the most fascinating insects in the world. Even though there are approximately 2000 mayfly species around the globe, the most interesting thing about the mayfly is that it has one of the shortest lifespan. Believe it or not, a mayfly only lives for about three hours, after it reaches the adult phase. This is why the mayfly is also known as the one-day fly in many cultures. You may thus wonder how do they mate. Well, the female mayfly lays a large number of eggs, usually on the surface of a river, where they float for about 45 days. This is the first stage of development. Then, there comes the larva stage, also called naiad. In this stage, a mayfly usually feeds on algae.

The most interesting thing is that, as a naiad, the mayfly can live in the water up to three years. When it finally reaches the adult stage, the mayfly only lives long enough to reproduce. The fact that in the adult stage the mayfly does not have a functional mouth may be another reason behind the short lifespan. Moreover, after the female mayfly lays down the eggs, it usually dies right away, on the surface of the water. The mayfly is also endangered by a number of predators, including frogs, newts, toads, small reptiles, birds, and even rodents. Fish are, however, the most common mayfly predators, because the insects can usually be found on waters. Speaking about where can the mayfly be found, even if they are spread in most parts of the world, North America is the most common place.

It is a shame that the mayfly dies soon after it becomes an adult, because after transforming from the larva stage, they are truly nice to watch. With the colorful set of wings that it has, the mayfly looks similar to a dragonfly. The mayfly does not harm humans in any way, so they are not dangerous either. It is thus clear that the mayfly is one of the most impressive creatures in the world.

Can You Get Rid of Mayflies?

[Facebook] [Twitter]

If you have a lake home where you live or go to relax on the weekends, there may be a handful of annoyances that get in the way of you having the perfect experience. Mayflies can be one of these annoyances. The problem with a lake home is that while it is a wonderful place for you to spend quality time, its location also makes it a popular target for creatures like mayflies. In some cases, there may be few enough mayflies so that it’s not actually an issue. However, if you’re dealing with a large amount of mayflies, you know just how annoying they can be.

There are a few facts you should know to help you better deal with this type of situation. One of these facts is that adult mayflies have a very short life cycle. While the entire mayfly life cycle lasts for around a year, their time as a winged adult can last for as little as a few hours. Once they reach this stage, their only objective is to mate. As a result of this cycle, it can be common for a very large swarm of mayflies to appear all at once.

It’s also worth noting that mayflies are only able to live in areas with high water quality. This means that even though they can be a nuisance, it is nice to know that the lake where you’re spending so much time isn’t troubled by large amounts of pollution.

Because of the way that their life cycle works, your best bet is to wait for a large swarm to die off on their own. However, while trying to eliminate all of them on your own isn’t a realistic option, you can discourage them from being attracted to your lake house by turning off the outdoor lights. If you need to keep the lights on, you can have the same impact by installing yellow outdoor bulbs that are specifically designed to discourage mayflies and other bugs.

Adult Mayflies

[Facebook] [Twitter]

Mayflies are one of the more interesting insects in the world because they have so many unusual characteristics. The most common known fact about the mayflies is that the adults live for only a very short time and in this time it is up to them to breed as quickly as possible so that they can release the next generation into the world. Once the adult mayflies are born into the world they only priority is to find a mate and breed with them.

The wings of the adult mayflies are transparent and therefore often very fragile. This said they make easy targets for their predators such as spiders that once caught in the spiders web the wings break and then there is no escape. The adults also have more than one tail, often having two or even three. Born for mating only the male adult mayflies have decisively long front legs that are used to grip the females during mating.

Due to the short lifespan of the adult they do not need to feed and therefore they do not actually have any parts of the mouth that work as they are not completely developed. The adults lay the eggs which are released in water or near water and then the larvae break out of the eggs and swim in this water feeding to get ready for the next stage of development which is adulthood. The life of the mayfly is fast an furious however the cycle is not complete without them.

Because the mayfly has six distinct legs you will find them classified under the file name of insects. There biological name is ephemeropteran which is broken down into two parts which means short lived winged insect. The mayfly are said to be relatives of the dragonfly which like the mayfly are as aquatic insects living around bodies of water. The short lived part of their species names is definitely one which belongs to this insect. Some of their species have such short lives that they live only for a few hours of the day which is long enough to find a mate, breed and have the female reproduce. Some of the mayflies are known to live longer however this is only for a few days.

There are approximately 2,500 species of mayfly around the world and most of these are like a delicacy for fish who will eat them as often as possible. The mayfly form makes for good fishing lures especially when you are using them for fly fishing. The females lay eggs on the surface of water which is mostly freshwater lakes or slow running streams. The eggs sink to the bottom and a larvae is born which live longer in this form than the adult mayfly does. These larvae live for up to a year long depending on the species of mayfly.

The lifespan of the adult is short lived because they are only meant for reproduction which is a shame for these insects after receiving the ability to fly. The wings are similar to the dragonfly wings which are see-through like a spiders web and very thin to reduce weight for flying. Like insects the mayfly is separated into three segments, the head, the thorax and the abdomen.

Follow the Mayfly Life Cycle

[Facebook] [Twitter]

Mayflies go from eggs to larva to subimagoes very quickly, living just long enough as adults to continue the cycle. The wing formed of Mayflies are those in the adult stages, and last only a few days. The entire life cycle of a typical mayfly lasts one year.

The life cycle of the mayfly begins when the eggs are deposited either on the surface of water or underneath. Most eggs of mayflies are submerged completely by female adults who push their abdomens under the water surfaces. After depositing the eggs the females die, often on the surface of the water where they deposited their eggs.

The immature mayflies go through several stages, from larva to instar. The mayflies molt in between each stage. How many molts the immature mayfly goes through depends on what type of species of which it is a part. The immature mayfly swims from its hatching place to the surface, making its way to land often via plants. Here the mayfly molts and becomes a subimagoes, with wings. This transition lasts no more than a few minutes.

After this they fly. They will molt one last time and become a full adult. The mayfly is unique in that it has a stage of molting beyond its winged form. This is very uncommon among winged insects. This adult stage is very brief, lasting just long enough for the mayflies to mate and for the females to deposit eggs on or below the water surface, after which they immediately die. The Mayfly life cycle lasts around one year on average.
